FAQ

Frequently
asked questions

Six topics, so you can go straight to what applies to you.

01The basics2 questions
What exactly am I buying?

Fonts are software, so you are buying a license to use the font, not the font itself. The license is an agreement between you and Iwan Type that defines where and how the font can be used.

It is a one-time payment with no expiry date: use the font for as long as you like, within the limits of your license. If your use outgrows those limits, you upgrade.

What if none of the three licenses fits my project?

We will set up a custom license. Email info@iwantype.com with details of the project and the scale of use you expect.

Embedding a font in a mobile app is covered by the Unlimited license, and some typefaces also offer a single-app license in their license menu.

02Desktop license3 questions
What does the Desktop license cover?

Installing the font on the number of devices you have licensed, and using it in:

Design and office software, such as Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Word.
Print: booklets, brochures, business cards and packaging.
Presentations and social media graphics.
Logos and brand identity systems.
PDFs, as long as the font is embedded in a way that prevents it from being extracted.
What’s the practical difference between Desktop and Web?

Desktop covers design work on your devices. Web covers serving the font on your website, so visitors see it as live text. Neither replaces the other.

The one exception: text placed on a website as a static JPG or PNG image falls under Desktop, so no Web license is needed.

Do your fonts work on iPad and mobile?

Yes. Install them with a font manager app, or import them straight into the design app you use.

The Desktop license covers tablets and phones as well as computers, so include them in your device count.

03Web license3 questions
How is monthly traffic calculated?

Use your average monthly visits: add up three consecutive months and divide by three, or take the figure from your analytics tool, then choose the tier that covers it.

If your traffic is above our largest tier, email info@iwantype.com and we will put together a license to match. You can upgrade later and pay only the difference.

Can I give the font files to my web developer?

Yes, for the sole purpose of setting up your website’s typography. You and your developer are both bound by the license terms.

Once the work is finished, the developer must delete the font files from their devices and email.

Which license do I need for digital ads?

If the text is flattened into a static image, the Desktop license is enough.

If the font loads inside the ad and renders live, you need a Web license, sized by ad impressions rather than website traffic.

04Designers and agencies4 questions
I design for clients under my own license. When does a client need one?

Your license covers your design work for any client, on any number of projects.

Clients can use what you deliver freely, with no license of their own: final artwork, images, PDFs the font can’t be extracted from, or designs with the type converted to outlines. The font files themselves are never handed over.

A client only needs a license to use the font files directly: Desktop to install them on their own devices, or Web to use them on their website.

I’m buying for a specific client project. Whose name goes on the license?

The client’s. Check out with their details so the license belongs to them from the start.

You can design with it for as long as you are working on that client’s behalf.

When the project ends and you hand over the font, the license stays with the client. For your other work, you will need a license of your own.

I’ve designed a logo with the font. What do I need?

A Desktop license is enough. Convert the type to outlines in your design software and deliver the logo; your client can use it without a license.

You are free to adjust the outlined letters to suit the logo. The font files themselves must not be modified.

We’re a group with subsidiaries. Who should buy the license?

The parent company buys the license and can share it with its subsidiaries, while remaining responsible for everyone’s compliance with its terms.

Limits apply to the group as a whole: total devices for Desktop, and combined monthly traffic across all websites for Web.

05Purchase and delivery4 questions
Which payment methods do you accept?
Credit and debit cards.
Apple Pay and Google Pay, on supported devices.
PayPal, including card payments through PayPal.
Link, for fast checkout with a saved card.
My payment was declined. What should I do?

Most often the card itself blocks international or online purchases, which is a common default on cards issued in the Gulf.

Enable international payments in your banking app and try again.
Or pay with PayPal instead.

If it still doesn’t go through, email info@iwantype.com with your order number and we will arrange another way to pay.

Can I get an invoice in my organization’s name?

Yes. Email info@iwantype.com with your organization’s name and details and the licenses you need, and we will issue the invoice.

Prices are the same as those listed on the website.

How and when do I receive the font?

Immediately after payment, as a direct download: a zip file of OTF fonts, named after the typeface and the license.

You can download the files again at any time from your email receipt or from the Downloads page in your account.

06After purchase2 questions
Can I upgrade my license later?

Yes, at any time, and you only pay the difference between what you paid and the price of the larger license. You can upgrade from a single weight to the full family, or to more devices or a higher traffic tier.

An upgrade stays within the same license type (Desktop can’t become Web, for example) and can’t be used to add a different typeface.

Can I exchange a license or get a refund?

No. All font sales are final: the files are delivered instantly, and there is no way to confirm that copies are deleted after download.

Please check the license type and weights before you check out. If you are unsure, email info@iwantype.com before you buy, not after.
